Los Angeles in Vivid Colors

Los Angeles in Vivid Colors

Los Angeles is a wonderful city to live in as a photographer.
I was determined to get to know my adopted city a lot better, so I took some time off from my freelance work as a book designer and typesetter, and set out every morning to a different part of the city, camera in hand.
I began to experiment with altering and enhancing the colors in my photographs. The result is this series of color enhanced photographs of landmark buildings and sites in Los Angeles.
These are some of my favorite photographs, and hope that you enjoy looking at photographs nearly as much as I did working on them.

Candelabra on Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, August 2015

Candelabra on Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, August 2015

Most people don’t notice the Candelabra atop this building on Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles, just down the street from the Museum of Tolerance (9786 West Pico Boulevard at Roxbury Drive).

I altered the colors in Photoshop in both of these photos. The one on the bottom is closer to what most people see when they drive by.

Los Angeles Union Station, Color Enhanced Photographs

Los Angeles Union Station, Color Enhanced Photographs

I was having a lot of fun the other day altering the colors in this shot of the front entrance to Los Angeles Union Station. I enjoy working on photographs of Union Station because there are distinct areas of color and many interesting and ornate design motifs.

Union Station is located in downtown Los Angeles, and became known as the “Last of the Great Railway Stations” to be built in the United States when it opened in May 1939.

Union Station is still a major Southern California transportation hub with long-distance, regional, and commuter trains and several Metro Rail subway and light rail lines.

A group of architects led by John Parkinson and Donald B. Parkinson combined several architectural styles: Dutch Colonial Revival, Mission Revival, and Streamline Moderne. The Parkinsons—as they were known—designed many landmark buildings in Los Angeles, including Los Angeles City Hall, Bullocks Wilshire, and Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The first of the following photographs is my original and unaltered shot, followed by three of my color-enhanced versions.

The design of Union Station is a timeless and perfect blend of form and function. Many thanks to The Parkinsons for providing me with this gorgeous building as a platform for my own work.
