I earned a very good living as a freelance book typesetter for Addison-Wesley, McGraw-Hill, Jossey-Bass and many other book publishers in San Francisco and around the country from the late 1980s through the mid-1990s, when I achieved my long-term goal and also began working as a freelance book designer. I admired and studied the work of the designers who freelanced for my publisher clients, and over time developed my own style and techniques. As a designer and typesetter, my goal is to enhance each document in a way that makes it immensely readable and very attractive.
A definite highlight for me was designing and typesetting several books for the Smithsonian Scholarly Press and two books for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in DC, including a full-color book/catalogue to accompany a 2011 Alexander Calder exhibit.
Another interesting book that I work on is an annual collection of Gallup Polls. The books are 600 pages with over 1,500 charts and graphs to be placed in precise positions in the text flow. When I first began working on these books many years ago, it took me months to layout the pages. I can now provide first proofs within 2-3 weeks due to improvements in my production process.
I also typeset books for the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC. The designs for these books usually follow the same standard template, but they are challenging as some contain hundreds of images.
Some of my goals and strengths:
1. Completing long and complicated design and typesetting projects on-time and below budget.
2. Working on complex publications with many photographs and graphic elements. My goal is to place images in the most attractive and space-efficient manner possible, optimizing the relative importance of details in the images through sizing, placement, and bleeds, etc.
3. I have been creating EPUB e-books from InDesign print files for may years. I use InDesign CC to create validated EPUB3 files that can be sold through online bookstores.
I’ve been available to work on freelance book design and typesetting projects since 1988, and hope to be working for many years to come. I have PDFs of all the books I’ve worked on and can send sample files upon request. Please feel free to contact me any time with questions about your projects.
